John followed as Sid led the way. He heard the snap of the lock on the bedroom door before he left the cabin. Poor Zack. Hold on, lover. Got to get back. Who knows what the fuck Grant will do to you? He wanted to go back in there, crush Grant’s face in and bring Zack along, but Troy needed a doctor’s care. The decision to rescue Troy over Zack left John cold with self-hatred. He’d never forgive himself if Grant hurt Zack.

When John stepped outside, he adjusted Troy on his chest. Relief filled him when he saw Micah in the back of his car, fast asleep. At least he might save Zack’s son, then some part of Zack would live on.

John helped Troy into the seat next to Micah and turned to find himself nose to nose with Sid's gun. Carefully, he directed the gun away. "Please. Unless you can get into the evidence vault, point that thing elsewhere."

"Get in the car." Sid grunted.

"You maybe want to drive?" John offered.

Sid rolled his eyes. "No."

John slid behind the wheel and started the car. He should have left the others behind.

Then he could've driven the car into a tree and taken Sid out of the equation and made his way back to the cabin to helped Zack escape. He didn't dare risk hurting Troy or the boy, though.

Three miles from the cabin, Sid dropped the gun to the floorboard. "Radio in and tell them we're coming," he ordered.

John turned to him incredulously. " You're the informant?"

"Undercover -- on loan from Drug Enforcement Administration. Radio in we need an ambulance to meet us at the corner of 125 and Weston. The boy needs to go to the hospital, possible hypothermia. This idiot needs treatment." Sid cast a bitter glance at John. "That's your idea of decent back-up? A desk jockey ex-boyfriend and his twin?"

“What the hell’s going on here?” John sputtered.

“I’ve been deep undercover for eighteen months. Headquarters sent in two operatives in parallel operations. Zack was one, and you were the other. That little escapade that broke you two up? Nearly blew the whole thing. I’ve been watching in case they tried to take Zack out, and keeping Micah safe. But Grant has a major hard-on for Zack so we have to get these two to safety and hope Zack can hold out,” Sid said with a grim face.
